When does a baby zebra finch start eating? One of the zebra finches laid 3 eggs and they've been sitting on them for two weeks. Finally, one of them hatched and I was wondering when the baby needs to be fed. And what if the mother and father don't feed it? I wanna make sure the first baby doesn't die. That would be horrible.

Archaeopteryx replied: "Zebra Finches are primarily seed eating birds. They prefer millet, but will eat many other kinds of fruit seeds as well. While they prefer seed, Zebra Finches will also eat fruits, vegetables, egg food, and live food, enjoying a meal of mealworms and other small insects. They are particularly fond of spray millet, and one or two of these small birds will eat a spray millet stalk within a few days. Petamine or "nestling foods" must be available while your finches are feeding chicks and are an excellent high protein supplement when finches are molting or under stress. It may be used as a treat at other times but do not use it as your only treat food since it can make your finches overweight."

How fast can a baby zebra grow in three weeks? Yeah, yeah, I know, random question, right? Well, I have to write a short story for my English class and it involves baby zebras. So... yeah. :) Thanks. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

David C replied: "The baby zebra , so wobbly on its feet for the first days, amazingly became sure of herself in just a week. By the third week she was twice her birth size, proudly walking by her mom's side...... YOU DO THE REST"

how long can baby zebra finches live without? how long can baby zebra finches live without food? cause i dont know if the mom is feeding them and it hatched yesterday. so would it have died by now if it wasent being fed? and ow could i tell if its being fed without disturbing the other birds? sorry if its a confusing question.

Mackenzie R replied: "Zebra Finches Rock, If memory serves me right, you asked a question similar to this one. Anyways, the crop area would be full. The crop is the thing that is on it's chest/neck, and the mother only feeds them a few hours after being fed because the yolk holds them over until the mom is ready to feed and stabilizes over the stress of laying an egg."

Mz Fun Size replied: "They won't live a long time but because of the yolk inside the egg they were feeding off for 12 or so days is still in their belly, they can last a good day or possibly two. Finches are sneaky birds, even though you think they may not be feeding them, they probably are because they tend to be shy when people are around. They probably feed it when you're not watching and/or at night time. To be able to tell if they're being fed, their crops (the area just under its neck on its chest) should be "bloated" and look as if there's seed or something in there. But it might not be as easy to tell until they're a bit older. Just try and relax, chances are the parents are doing exactly as they should, good luck and well done for what you have already so far achieved."

nixity replied: "The day they hatch they usually do not get fed, or if they do, it is very little. At this size their crop could only hold about 2-3 pieces of seed at a time, and for the first 24 hours they are still absorbing their yolk so they technically don't NEED food - but usually they begin begging as soon as they regain their energy after hatching. Can you check the baby? If you see a seed or too through the skin on its neck, then it has food in its crop and it is being fed. If it has been a day, and it has not been fed, it will begin to starve."

What food should i feed my baby zebra finch? I usually put seeds only, is their any specific food that should be given to the baby finch... and what degrees celsius is suited for finch..now it's winter and they stay outside..

aviv p replied: "baby zebras"

l.daryle replied: "I have zebra finch's. Don't leave them outside in winter. They are from warm african type climates. The mother finch always feeds the babies in my cage. Digested seed mush of some kind. But there is a type of baby bird formula at Pets Mart, if the mother isn't available. But the mother bird has important antibodies she passes on through the food. Hope this helps. I love to listen to those little birds. They are awesome!"

panther replied: "baby finches in uk eat flys small insects that mum brings then you get them a pet store"

texaselle replied: "My Zebra Finches eat a mix of fruits and veggies every day; at first they didn't eat them, but I continued offering them to them and they eventually starting to try them... now they devour their veggie medely the second I place it in their flight. I serve them a mix of peas, corn, chopped apple, mustard greens or spinach (helps in the absorption of calcium), kiwi, orange, pear, and cooked pinto beans. I also offer chopped hard boiled eggs about once every week. Finches also need cuttlebone and a mineral block. Finches are very social birds... if you have just the one, he/she might really enjoy a friend. I was assuming your baby finch was eating on its own, but if it is not eating on its own, there are handfeeding mixes available at pet stores, I use Kaytee's Exact... but if you ahve never hand fed a bird, please seek out help from someone who can show you, because it is very easy to do it incorrectly and harm/injure/kill your bird."

When can my baby zebra finches leave their parents? My babies left the nest 24 days ago. Their beaks are now orange not black and they seem to be eating on their own. I never hear them crying to be feed anymore. One parent was white so I'm not sure what their colors will be. They don't have typical zebra markings. I'm not sure if they were going to get them at what age would their color would change? Right now they are brown and white. Are they old enough to leave?

Vicki H replied: "I would say they are old enough to leave their parents the babies develop these markings like the red cheek patches and the white spots and on brown under the wing, they would be a male, if they are just plane they are females Male hope i helped"

Captain Howdy replied: "They should be fully weaned by 6 weeks at this time you can remove them from the parents."

seppe replied: "the baby's can leave the parents after a 2-3weeks, they leave the nest after 20 days, after 2-months they have there color and after 90weeks there able for the flock."

is it all right to put an infra red lamp on a partially shelled baby zebra finch? the baby bird is half in the shell the baby is so tiny we do not want to hurt it.

Tammy C replied: "I wouldn't.You might end up causing the little bird to become dehydrated or even burned,as it has such delicate skin.Just cover the cage so it stays warm. After it is out of the egg,the parents will keep it warm."

lA cHiiKa fr3scA replied: "dont do that it might dehydrate. ask a vet to be safe"

How do you tell the difference between the baby zebra finch and the daddy zebra finch? see when the babies hatched we let them stay in with their parents for awhile now we can't tell the difference. I mean does the dady have a darker beak or certain marks or what? I need advice quick.

fairly smart replied: "The babies are usually born with black beeks...if they all have turned orange, you are out of luck...The male has an orange breast spot. The babies won't display adult colors for a while."

Steve 'art replied: "Once the beaks has changed from black to orange on the females and red on the males, it is virtually immpossible to tell adults from young in a colony of zebra finches. The best way is to put small plastic split rings on the chicks so that you know which are the babies when they are ready to be split from Mum and Dad."

lerxstwannabe replied: "It depends on how long a “while” is. The adult male Zebra Finches will develop orange/brown patch son their wings with white spots and usually a very pronounced “blush” on their cheeks. If your babies are grown up males along with the daddy, then…. well…. Have them draw straws : )"

ggmsixer replied: "all baby zebra finches look like the mom then about 1 1/2 months or so if have a male in the clutch,,it'll start getting the black markings and then the bright orange cheeks will slowly appear but until then they all look like the mom so give it a couple of months and how do i know this,,we raised them for awhile....."

daniel_wright_01 replied: "you cant unless they have a distinguashing mark on them"

shuincorp1918 replied: "Its the color of the beak, if it is orange its the baby, black, its the daddy."

LadyCockatiel replied: "Well the babies may very well have black or dark beaks. Also the babies wont have their organge cheek patches yet making them look like little girls. Also you can watch his behavior and watch who it is who follows the female around the most."

I have a baby zebra finch that fell and now his leg looks like a bruise? My little zebra finch fell from his cage, about a foot and three inches. His leg looks all deep, dark purple, like a bruise, and it's turning black. He lifts it up like he's in terrible pain, but he can barely manage moving around. I don't know what to do! Help!

ms bell replied: "He could have broken his leg. He needs to see the vet for treatment. In the meantime, keep him well-fed and warm. You can use a heating pad placed securely underneath the cage bottom to keep him extra-warm. You can also place him in the warmest room of the house. Keep his food and water bowls close by, preferably on his cage floor, so he doesn't have to attempt to climb up to get at them. Please get him to the vet immediately. The little guy could easily go into shock and die if the leg is broken."

how long do baby zebra finches stay in thier nest for before they come out of their nest? mine have been in the nest for about 2 weeks now and they still wont come out. Pleses help. i need advice.

Sterlingkit replied: "My teacher had baby zebra finches and they stayed in the nest for about 3 weeks before hopping out of the nest and hopping around at the bottom of the cage."

wraith replied: "your looking at 3 to 4 weeks till they fledge then atleast another 2 to 3 weeks till they are feeding enough on their own to be independent"

I have 5 baby zebra finch Can I let them out of the cage to fly around the house? They have been out of the nest for 1 week and seem to fly as much as they can in the cage. I used to let the parents fly around the house and they loved it. I am just afraid they will not get fed because they are not eating on their own yet.

wacky replied: "My advice is not to let them fly around the house,as young birds can damage or kill themselves by collideing with things in a house . The other reason I would say no is that they will be very difficult to catch up. Leave them with their parents till you see them feeding themselves."

kaydee2790 replied: "It would be a horrible idea due to they could run into walls and break there necks there fragile birds , and many things lying around the house could be poisinis to them buy a bigger cage if you feel they need to be able to fly around."
